Ray Russell: Now, More Than Ever Album EPK (Releasing May 21, 2013)
Available at www.abstractlogix.com/xcart/product.php?productid=25782
A bona fide guitar hero in his native England, Ray Russell bridges musical worlds on Now, More Than Ever, his potent debut on the Abstract Logix label. Russell's latest release comes seven years after his last studio recording, Goodbye, Svengali, the innovative guitarist's heartfelt tribute to the late Gil Evans. Featuring an all-star cast, including drummer Gary Husband and bassists Jimmy Johnson, Mo Foster and Anthony Jackson, this bold outing straddles that no man's land between rock power and unfettered jazz improvisation while conjuring up ethereal guitar synth soundscapes along the way. Now, More Than Ever stands as one of the more dynamic outings in Russell's extensive discography. Fans of John McLaughlin, Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth and Terje Rypdal will want to check out this latest triumph from one of fusion's great innovators. The creator of such groundbreaking and seminal jazz-rock works as 1968's Turn Circle and 1969's Dragon Hill, guitarist-composer Russell emerged on a fertile '60s London music scene as a ubiquitous session musician, along with fellow six-stringers John McLaughlin and Jimmy Page. Though Russell has an abundance of recordings to his credit, from small group sessions to soundtrack recordings for movies and TV, Now, More Than Ever stands as a primer for the wide stylistic swath that this inspired artist continues to cut with his trusty six-string in hand.

    Alex Machacek is the first musician in the world that has managed to break the guitar cult ball and chain off his ankle, and do something never before done in music. What he does is absolutely his own. He is no longer stuck in this jazz, jazz/rock and shredder prison with everybody else. Alex is one-of-a-kind. He reminds me of being in a remake of the movie with Pink Floyd. Where the kids start chanting: "all in all, you're just a (hah ha!) ..nother brick in the wall." But, unlike the original flick, Alex goes over to the wall and starts magically chipping away at the mortar with one hand and starts pulling the bricks out. The wall has this big hole in it where Alex walks out to the other side of it. Then, he goes, "I'm not".

    How does Jeff Sipe even think this fast, let alone actually do this? Alex is relentless on this tune. This entire song doesn't even seem possible to do. Their sense of timing is unreal.

    AJ is my favorite bassist bar none. But, I did not like this project. Not enough African soul for me, groove or warmth. I prefer him with Chaka Khan, Michel Camilo, Hiromi and others where his soul, musicality and technical genius were more present.

    I first saw him on a video uploaded to youtube by a buddy of mine, from the Warren Haynes Christmas jam Jimmy mentions. It was with Bela Fleck, on the song "Monkey See" all the musicians blew me away, but none more than Jimmy Herring, I have been a fan of his ever since.

    An other simple way to play you know you know is to start with triplet melody playing 3×3 then 3×5 silence. on the second play 3×5 with the melody triplet then 3×5 on silence again it works perfectly ;)

    • @jackhammer111
      @jackhammer111 5 років тому

      that's more simple? lol. no. it's 12 measures of 4. the hitch is that it begins on the "and" before measure 1 of the twelve, then repeats starting with the & of 12. This drove me nuts for years. He just explained it. 12-4. The first note is not on 1. f you were counting the song in you'd say 1&2&3&4& and the first note you play is on the and of 4 Then when you get to 12 the first note is played on 12&, and your second note is on beat one of your next 12. And it repeats like that through the whole song. I guess you could say if it was easy everybody would be doing it.. It's the hitch that makes it otherworldly like closing y our eyes holding your arm out and turning around just fast enough to make you slightly dizzy. each phrase makes you feel just a little off kilter, but you are not. You are still grounded in 12/4 as long as you start on the &. the reason that is simpler is it stays in standard classical notation in 12/4, not bouncing from one time signature to another and back. i

    I was really stoked to learn this. Then I realized I already do this, but with numbers instead of "daka" sounds. So for 7/4, I say 1-2-1-2-1-2-3, and repeat. Same principle, but I think it's easier for my brain to process numbers.

      Thing about konnakol is that you can vocalize it faster because of the consonant noises. So being able to do a fast quintuplet, counting 1 2 3 4 5 very quickly is a pain in the ass (or whatever combination you may use), but with konnakol it is a breeze.
